ADHD & Autism Assessments

Supporting Clarity, Understanding, and Self-Acceptance.

At Akbay Psychology, we offer comprehensive, evidence-based assessments for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum in adults (18+).

Our neuro-affirming approach focuses not on finding "what’s wrong," but on supporting you in understanding how your brain works, how it may differ from others, and how to make sense of your experiences in a way that’s empowering, respectful, and useful.

Why Seek An Assessment?

Many adults may have felt "different" for years; perhaps struggling with focus, emotional regulation, social overwhelm, or sensory sensitivity. Some have never felt fully understood, while others have been misdiagnosed or misunderstood. Seeking a formal assessment can:

  • Provide clarity around lifelong challenges or strengths

  • Help you better understand yourself through a neurodivergent lens

  • Offer validation for your lived experience

  • Inform workplace, educational, or therapeutic accommodations

  • Enhance self-compassion and communication with others

A formal diagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism can open the door to tailored strategies, increased self-awareness, and better support systems.

What Makes Our Approach Different?

We are proud to offer neurodiversity-affirming assessments, meaning:

  • We do not treat ADHD or Autism as a disorder to be “fixed”

  • We value individual strengths, identity, and lived experience

  • We use inclusive, non-pathologising language

  • We aim to empower your neurodivergence, not focused on labelling you

While psychologists do not prescribe medication for ADHD treatment, our assessments can still be used to:

  • Support further medical consultations (e.g., with a GP or psychiatrist)

  • Provide the documentation needed for workplace or study supports

  • Inform access to NDIS or other services (particularly for Autism)

What's Involved: Assessment Process

The ADHD and Autism assessment process is structured, but collaborative. It typically includes the following stages:

1. BACKGROUND SESSION

A thorough clinical interview to understand your history, current concerns, strengths, other psychological factors, and goals for seeking assessment. This session will also include completion of self-report questionnaires to support the information retrieved at interview. Please allow up to 90 minutes for this session.

2. STANDARDISED SESSION

A thorough diagnostic interview using standardised ADHD and/or Autism questionnaires to assess how you meet the DSM-5-TR criteria. Please allow up to 90 minutes for this session. Depending on the referral question, assessments may also include:

  • Cognitive and executive functioning measures

  • Emotional, social, and sensory profile screening

  • Optional informant questionnaires (e.g., from family or partner)

3. SCORING, INTEGRATION, AND REPORT PREPARATION

We carefully analyse the results and integrate findings with clinical insights. You will receive a comprehensive written report detailing outcomes, strengths, areas of difficulty, and personalised recommendations. Reports may take up to 4 weeks after consultations have been completed to be finalised and provided to you.

4. FEEDBACK & RECOMMENDATIONS SESSION

Typically a week or two after consultations have been completed, we meet to discuss your results in plain language, answer your questions, and work with you to create a tailored support plan and provide you with useful recommendations. Please allow up to 50 minutes for this session.

Important Information:
  • The assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis. Results are based on available data, clinical presentation, and diagnostic criteria. The psychological assessment of ADHD/Autism is as similar as any medical or health assessments and testing where the results may yield the no presence of conditions due to not meeting diagnostic criteria.

  • Akbay Psychology follows the guidelines for psychological practice as outlined in the APS Code of Ethics, and performs its assessments efficiently, ethically, professionally, and responsibly using the most appropriate evidence-based testing measures and materials.

  • The fees listed above are estimates only, as some assessments may require additional sessions depending on your individual presentation. The final structure of the assessment may evolve once your clinician begins working with you, and if any changes are needed, your psychologist will discuss this with you in advance. Fees in this service are subject to change.

  • All listed fees above are inclusive of GST. Payment is required right at the start of each consultation session as listed in the stages of our Assessments Process. Final reports will only be released once all assessment fees have been paid in full.

  • Psychologists are not authorised to prescribe medication. If you are seeking ADHD-related medication, you may still need to be reviewed by a psychiatrist following your assessment.

  • Akbay Psychology provides the ADHD and Autism assessment services to adults (18+).

  • If, after the assessment, there are further questions or concerns, Akbay Psychology will work with the client to rectify/amend the report for an accurate depiction of the full assessment.

Medicare Rebates

If you are between 18-25 years of age, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to 8 assessment sessions specifically related to an autism assessment, under MBS Item 82000. To access this rebate, you’ll need a referral from a psychiatrist or GP, with a request stating the need for a "Complex Neurodevelopmental Disorder assessment".

Please note that Medicare rebates do not apply to ADHD assessments or report preparation fees.

Referrals: We accept self-referrals for assessments if paying privately in full and not needing medication treatment (in the case of ADHD). However, if eligible for the MBS Item 82000 and/or needing medication, then it is advisable to have a referral from your GP or psychiatrist.
